The cast of Shadowhunters got back together to bid farewell to the series (Picture: WainwrightAE)The cast of Shadowhunters reunited on Monday night for a party as the final ever episode of the show aired in the US.
The supernatural drama premiered in 2016, going on to win a clutch of awards including the GLAAD award for outstanding drama series due to its inclusive representation of the LGBTQ+ community.
However it was cancelled in June 2018 – and despite a massive fan campaign to save the show that even reached buses in London, -not to mention a change.org petition – Shadowhunters has now come to an end.
So just why was the Freeform show cancelled in the first place?
Here’s what you need to know.
Why was Shadowhunters cancelled?
Freeform’s EVP of Programming and Development Karey Burke said last year that the decision to shelve the series was ‘purely economic’.
Speaking to the website Deadline she explained that it had a lot to do with the channel moving towards ordering shorter runs of shows, which led to makers Constantin Film losing their output deal with Netflix, which part-funded the series – and it wasn’t a cheap show to make.
The final series has been airing in the US and on Netflix, wrapping things up with a two-part finale (Picture: Netflix)‘We went back and forth with them but ultimately we just couldn’t make the economics work,” she explained. ‘We were very happy creatively with it.’
Freeform later said in a statement: We are very proud of Shadowhunters, a series that broke new ground in the genre world and became a fan favourite,’ Freeform said in a statement.
‘However, along with our partners at Constantin, we reached the very difficult decision not to renew the show for a fourth season. But as big supporters and fans ourselves, Freeform insisted on and championed the filming of a special two-part finale that would give devoted fans a proper ending.’
The series was shelved after the makers ended an agreement they had with Netflix (Picture: Netflix)Showrunners Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin have since told metro.co.uk that the decision to end the series fell to Netflix and not to Freeform – as the streaming service were the ones to end their contract with the channel.
‘It took us several months to understand what had actually gone on in terms of the contracts and the business and what had gone awry so that’s was also the realisation of how screwed up the business was,’
Netflix are the ones who had it internationally and they are the ones that cancelled it. ‘Netflix made the decision, so we knew it wasn’t going to go to them.’
What was Shadowhunters about?
Sorry, this video isn’t available any more.
The series was based on the young adult fantasy series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare – which was also adapted into a movie, The Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones in 2013.
Katherine McNamara played Clarissa ‘Clary Fray’ Fairchild, who discovers on her 18th birthday that she is actually descended from a line of human-angel hybrids – the titular ‘shadowhunters’ of the title – who protect humans from demons.
However things got more complicated when her mother Jocelyn was abducted by a group of rogue Shadowhunters known as The Circle – leaving Clary to team up with another band of Shadowhunters – including Jace (Dominic Sherwood) and Simon (Alberto Rosende) to try and save her.
When is the final episode of Shadowhunters released in the UK?
The episode is available now to stream on Netflix UK.
