Who is Terra Newell?
Daughter of Debra Newell, Terra is famous for her part in the Dirty John tale.
Originally a podcast, Dirty John is the true story which has been made into a Netflix series.
The series is a true crime anthology that focuses on John Meehan, whose romance with Debra Newell spiralled into a nightmare.
Debra’s life was seemingly perfect up until she met the handsome doctor who, little did she know, was hiding a dark past as a conman – and that she would be his next victim.

What happened between Terra and John?
One night, when Terra was heading out for the evening, John Meehan pulled up behind her in his car.
On the front seat next to him, John had prepared what the police went on to describe as a ‘kidnap kit’: duct tape, kitchen ties, a vial of injectable drugs and a set of kitchen knives.
Silent and focused, he got out and grabbed Terra from behind – unleashing a knife from his bag and slashing her arms.
“He was trying to push me into his car and I tried to get away from him,” she told Dateline. “I was screaming. As he put his hand over my mouth I bit down as hard as I could.”
The pair tumbled to the ground in the struggle.

Terra then used her heavy boots to kick the knife from her attackers grip and as it fell to the pavement just inches from her right hand she grabbed hold of it tightly.
“I just started stabbing him,” she continues. “I thought if he got back up he’s going to kill me.”
Terra stabbed John 13 times – leaving wounds in his shoulder, arm, back, chest – and one in his left eye through to his brain.
When police arrived he was barely breathing.
Four days after the attack his life support was turned off due to the severity of his brain injuries.
He was placed in a box and cremated, no funeral followed.
Terra was questioned and released when police realised she’d acted in self-defence.
