Don Rickles will still feature as Mr Potato Head in Toy Story 4 (Picture: Getty Images)Actor Don Rickles provided the original voice of Toy Story’s Mr Potato Head and despite his death in 2017, movie bosses have found a way for him to still be the character in the fourth movie.
Toy Story 4 is scheduled for release later this year and it’s been revealed that the movie will feature the sweetest tribute to former star Rickles.
Thanks to plenty of old footage and recordings and today’s technology, the Toy Story team have managed to still voice Mr Potato Head with Don’s voice, despite him sadly not being around to record the movie for himself.
Pretty cool, right?
Toy Story 4’s director Josh Cooley confirmed that Don will still very much be a part of this movie, as requested by his family as he had starred in all three of Toy Story’s previous films.
Thanks to old recordings the movie will pay tribute to Don by featuring him as Mr Potato Head once again (Picture: Newsmakers)Cooley told Entertainment Weekly: ‘Of course we loved Don obviously, and after he passed, his family contacted us and asked if there was any way that we could create a performance using the recordings that we had.’
He explained that Don had signed up to be a part of Toy Story 4, but they never got the chance to record him for the film.
Here’s where 25 years of old footage came into play and made it possible for Mr Potato Head to live on.
‘We went through, jeez, 25 years of everything we didn’t use for Toy Story 1, 2, 3, the theme parks, the ice capades, the video games – everything that he’s recorded for Mr Potato Head and we were able to do that.
Don died of kidney failure in 2017 – he was signed up for Toy Story 4 after starring in all three films before (Picture: Getty Images)‘So I’m very honoured that they asked us to do that, and I’m very honoured that he’s in the film. Nobody can replace him.’
Somebody pass us the kleenex. It really is a tribute like no other.
Stand-up comic and actor Don passed away aged 90 in April 2017. He died of kidney failure at his Beverly Hills home and is survived by wife Barbara and daughter Mindy, 52. He and Barbara also shared a son Larry, who died in 2011.
Toy Story 4 is set to pick up from where the third movie left off, with Andy handing over all his toys to Bonnie for a new life.
Woody and co are then introduced to Forky – a ‘toy’ that Bonnie created in pre-school however, Forky is not happy with life as a toy, proclaiming he was made for ‘soup, salads and then the trash’ and so Woody decides to help him understand how he can be Bonnie’s friend.
However, after running into Bo Peep in an antiques store, he must decide whether to reunite with Bo, who is living out her lost toy life at the carnival in a new badass outfit, or go back to Bonnie.
A new trailer dropped for Toy Story 4 and proved it’s going to make us laugh as much as it’s going to make us cry (while throwing in plenty of nostalgic feels, too).
Buzz Lightyear is kidnapped and turned into a carnival prize while on a mission to rescue Woody and Forky.
Returning for the film are Tom Hanks (Woody), Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) and Joan Cusack (Jessie) and they’ll be joined by Jordan Peele, Keanu Reeves and Keegan-Michael Key.
Toy Story 4 is out in UK cinemas on 21 June 2019.
