He stormed: “I wonder if we should bother running candidates.
“I don’t expect the Conservative Party to do particularly well in the European elections.”
It came as elections guru Sir John Curtice warned the Tories have “the most to lose” in the controversial elections.
Tory activists are seething at Theresa May for agreeing to delay Brexit until Halloween.
Many have downed tools are refusing to knock on doors and deliver leaflets for the party.
Sir John told the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme Brexit is set to be the crunch battleground at the ballot box in the EU elections.
He said: “As Brexit is seemingly consuming the nation, that election on 23 May, may end up being surrogate for how people might vote in second EU referendum.”
He added: “It is the Conservative Party who inevitably have most to worry about that.”
Another senior Tory MP told The Sun: “My activists are seeing a huge amount of anger on the doorstep. People are furious.”

Speaking in Washington, he told the BBC: “The only way we can avoid that is by getting a deal agreed and done quickly and if we can do that by May 22 then of course we can avoid fighting European parliamentary elections.”The elections cost an estimated £109milllion to put on.
