Jim Gamble, the top child protection cop in the UK’s first Maddie investigation, tried to convince Gerry to confess
But Mr Gamble told a sensational new Netflix documentary about the three-year-old’s disappearance that he is now convinced that Maddie’s parents did nothing wrong.
Mr Gamble said he helped Mr McCann write an appeal to Maddie’s abductor after she went missing during a family holiday in Portugal in 2007.
He said he hoped his words might prompt Mr McCann to come forward and confess if he was guilty.
The appeal said that “sometimes people make terrible mistakes in life they never intended, but ultimately it’s never too late to do the right thing”.
Mr Gamble said he was actually trying to speak directly to Mr McCann with the statement.
COP TRIED TO MAKE GERRY CONFESS
“I think it was the only way of delivering that message or reflecting that thought – if something had happened, if it was a mistake, it’s never too late to come out and stop all of this,” he said.
Despite suspecting Mr McCann “from the outset”, the former head of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre said he is now convinced the couple were innocent.
He told the new documentary: “Now I don’t believe that Kate or Gerry McCann had anything to do with the fact their daughter has gone missing and potentially had been abducted.”
His initial suspicion was based on his experience as a cop, as “statistically it’s likely to be the parents or somebody who’s in close proximity with the child”.
The McCanns have always denied any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.
The couple found themselves vilified in 2007 when the Portuguese police named them as formal suspects.
Dogs were said to have detected the presence of a body and blood on Madeleine’s toy in their apartment and in their hire car.
It led to claims the McCanns had given her too much sedative to get her to sleep.
‘CLUTCHING AT STRAWS’
But the documentary shows how experts view the evidence as unreliable and that naming the McCanns as suspects was a desperate act by police.Mr Gamble said: “The police were clutching at straws.”
The new documentary has also sensationally claimed that Maddie is still alive.
It suggests that people traffickers abducted the three-year-old in Portugal in 2007.
The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann features 40 experts and key figures in the case, some of whom argue she was taken to another foreign country.

Mr Gamble said: “I absolutely Mr believe that in my lifetime we will find out what has happened to Madeleine McCann.
“There’s huge hope to be had with the advances in technology. Year on year DNA is getting better. Year on year other techniques, including facial recognition, are getting better.
“And as we use that technology to revisit and review that which we captured in the past, there’s every likelihood that something we already know will slip into position.”
