THE Sun’s digital money team took home the prize gong at the financial journalism Oscars last night, winning Consumer Money Title of the Year at the Headlinemoney awards.
The award recognises journalists whose stories help keep their readers’ cash in their pockets – and makes them richer.
The Sun Online’s Money team: Helen Knapman, Alice Grahns, Tara Evans and Hollie Borland
It’s an incredible achievement made all the more impressive by the fact that three years ago the website didn’t even have a consumer money team.
The award celebrates “editorial excellence” and was decided on by a team of expert judges.
The Sun Money beat rivals from Which? Money magazine, Telegraph Money, Times Money and the Daily Mail’s Money Mail to scoop the top award.
It was commended for its “brilliant campaigning financial journalism” and use of alternative platforms, such as Facebook groups, to reach new audiences.
The Sun’s “Stop the Credit Rip Off” campaign has highlighted abuse of millions of high cost credit customers and forced the City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority, to cap rent to own costs.
The pressure also led to stricter rules for doorstep lenders.
While the ‘My First Home’ series, exploring how first-time buyers got on the ladder, was also a hit with readers and judges alike.
Tara Evans, Digital Consumer Editor, said: “I’m especially proud of our campaigns.”
Her team consists of Helen Knapman, Alice Grahns, Imogen Blake and Hollie Borland.
