Amy Dowden has opened up about her battle with Crohn’s (Picture: Lia Toby/WENN.com)Strictly Come Dancing pro Amy Dowden has revealed her diagnosis with Crohn’s disease, feeling comfortable with finally opening up about her health.
The dancer has starred as a pro on the BBC One show since 2017 and initially decided not to speak about her Crohn’s out of fear of being known as ‘Amy with Crohn’s’.
She noted to Hello! Magazine she doesn’t want sympathy, instead saying she was keen to establish herself as ‘Amy the dancer’ before revealing any personal news.
‘But I’ve done two seasons on the show now, and I think it’s important to speak out,’ she said.
‘It will be a relief that people will finally know, but I don’t want any sympathy. It doesn’t define me, it’s just part of me, and I want this to be a positive story.’
According to the NHS, Crohn’s disease is a lifelong condition in which parts of the digestive system become inflamed.
Symptoms include cramps, fatigue, severe vomitting and diarrhoea.
She detailed her condition in Hello (Picture: Hello)While she far wants a shoulder to cry on from the public, the 27-year-old does want others to know the debilitating effects sufferers of Crohn’s go through during flare ups, as she added: ‘There’s been days when I’ve not been myself and returned home from rehearsals and been really unwell.
‘People are often shocked by my day-to-day, but for me it’s just normal.’
Amy added that while she was on tour with Here Come The Girls she was sick in between the dance numbers.
‘The theatre wanted to call an ambulance. But the performance must go on,’ the dancer, who is engaged to fellow mover Ben Jones said. ‘I come out and put a smile on my face. It won’t stop me.’
