SAJID Javid has backed face-scanning cameras used by police to spot suspects in crowds.
The Home Secretary said it was right for forces to try new types of technology in their efforts to fight crime.

His support comes despite growing opposition to the “Big Brother” surveillance technique of facial recognition, where hi-tech CCTV cameras scan faces to see if they match wanted criminals in mugshot databases.
Britain’s privacy watchdog has warned about the “threat to privacy” of innocent people while campaigners are trying to get facial recognition banned in court.

MPs have also raised concerns that the software is only accurate at identifying white men.
Mr Javid told the BBC: “I back the police in looking at technology and trialling it and… different types of facial recognition technology is being trialled especially by the Met at the moment and I think it’s right they look at that.”
But he added: “If they want to take it further it’s also right that they come to government, we look at it carefully and we set out through Parliament how that can work.”
