Costumes are a television show essential. Without them, a show is rendered completely unbelievable, but with them they catapult our imaginations to a particular time and place, leaving behind a legacy in the process.
Whether it’s Villanelle’s pink dress in Killing Eve or Ugly Betty’s poncho, there’s usually always more than meets the eye and a whole world of tiny details that escape unnoticed.
Each week Back Into The Closet will deliver an exclusive look into the wardrobes of some of the world’s leading series to bring you all the costume secrets and niceties we might have missed.
Last time, we caught up with Dead To Me costume designer Trayce Gigi Field, but this time around we’re bringing you all the gems from RuPaul’s Drag Race thanks to Zaldy – and it’s sickening.
Mama Ru’s gowns each take seven days to make
It takes one week to wear an outfit that looks this good (Picture: Netflix)RuPaul’s gowns always ooze eleganza extravaganza – and with each piece taking seven days to make we would expect nothing less.
‘My team and I like to keep it to about seven days per gown,’ Zaldy told us.
‘Sometimes it might be finished in less than seven days, but sometimes we might need to take a pause and let an in progress gown sit for a moment while we decide what needs to happen to finish her off!’
Ru doesn’t give a damn as long as it’s glam
Ru has three special requests (Picture: Netflix)RuPaul leaves her runway outfits completely in Zaldy’s capable hands and only asks that he sticks by three special requests.
‘There really are no rules or guidelines in the approach other than the obvious; glamorous, colorful, and sparkly!’ Zaldy revealed.
‘It really is designing in the moment and having Ru as the muse and channeling what that looks like next year.’
Ru’s pieces are strictly off limits
Ru’s gowns aren’t for sale (Picture: Netflix)We’ll never be able to get our hands on a RuPaul gown. Not today [Satan], not tomorrow, not ever.
‘As much as we’d all like, Zaldy’s pieces are not ever for sale,’ we were told.
Oh and if you’re wondering how much a gown would set you back, keep wondering.
Shantay they all stay
RuPaul’s gowns aren’t up for grabs (Picture: Netflix)Ru keeps hold of all of her ensembles after untucking back stage.
‘RuPaul has a very impressive archive of all of her pieces,’ Zaldy admitted. ‘When we were filming the new Netflix series AJ and The Queen, Ru had some vintage looks hanging on a rack from maybe 20 years ago!
‘Each one beautifully maintained like I made them yesterday!’
Ru is a big fan of recycling
RuPaul doesn’t hesitate in reusing pieces (Picture: Netflix)A green-fingered queen is among us, squirrel friends.
Yep, Ru is a big fan of recycling accessories from season to season and we stan.
‘As we’ve seen in the past, just like any original outfit, all accessories may show up again maybe even twenty years later,’ Zaldy said.
‘They all go into the collective tool kit!’
Back Into The Closet is a weekly series that delves into most iconic costumes to ever grace television, from shows past and present. Check back each Thursday for the latest wardrobe secrets.
