And reports last night claimed Ferdinand has met United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over the role.
Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles and the Champions League at Old Trafford, was a team-mate of Solskjaer between 2002 and 2007.
And the Daily Mail said Woodward has identified former United captain Ferdinand as a strong candidate given his history at the club and subsequent business experience.
As SunSport revealed last night, the club’s slim chances of securing a top four place in the final two matches of the season have been rocked by an injury crisis.
Both Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku were left needing scans are picking up injuries in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
Solskjaer is now sweating on the pair’s fitness ahead of their final two must-win games — starting with Sunday’s trip to Huddersfield.
Rashford has a niggling shoulder injury, needing heavy strapping to even start the game, while Lukaku aggravated his dodgy hamstring.

The Belgian missed three weeks in March because of the problem.
United, three points off fourth-placed Chelsea, have flop Alexis Sanchez or 18-year-old Mason Greenwood as their only other options up front.
Eric Bailly will also miss the final two matches of the season and the Africa Cup of Nations after suffering a medial knee ligament injury against the Blues.
