Employees who spend hours staring at their computer screen could be suffering eye damage because they’re not closing and opening their eyes enough, according to a new survey.
By now you probably can’t stop blinking, which is a good thing because if you don’t do it enough it can lead to blurred vision, dry eyes and headaches caused by eyestrain.
A OnePoll study revealed we blinked between one and three times per minute when we were concentrating on a computer compared to 20 times per minute when we were not.
The study also showed more than half of us spent the working week looking at a monitor, with employees spending more than five-and-half hours looking at a screen per day.
This is a problem.

We need to blink more in front of screens at work (Picture: Getty Images)Eye care expert and oculoplastic surgeon Sabrina Shah-Desai said: ‘The results demonstrate how screens have really taken over our lives, they are everywhere we look.
‘Obviously it’s difficult to avoid them, especially in a working environment, but it’s vital that we take steps to look after our eyes and have regular breaks from artificial light and digital devices.
‘Our eyes are essential, and we should treat them well to minimise any long term damage and maintain optimum health.’
Some employees felt conditions in the workplace were not optimum for eyesight.
More than half of those questioned believed lighting, air conditioning and screens had a negative effect on their eyes.
This led to them adjusting computer brightness and text settings to help prevent damage to their eyesight.
In total 25% of people surveyed started wearing glasses when viewing monitors.

Sitting in front of a screen all day can damage four eyesight (Picture: Getty Images)It turned out televisions were the most common screen used, with 72% looking at one during an average day, followed by 68% viewing a mobile phone.
A further six in 10 admitted to looking at multiple devices at the same time, such as their laptop and phone.
The OnePoll survey of 2,000 adults was commissioned by Hycosan and Optase Eye Care.
