Over half of energy customers' smart meter 'failed' when switching supplier

MORE than half of energy customers with a smart meter found the devices failed when they switched supplier, a poll suggests.
A quarter of UK homes have the devices, intended to help reduce gas and electricity consumption.

But most of the 13.5 million installed are the first-generation SMETS1 meters, which can go “dumb” when a customer switches.
It means they stop sending automatic readings, or the in-home display showing energy usage stops working properly. The hitch was reported by 58 per cent of smart meter customers surveyed by consumer watchdog Which?.
Consumers have long been advised that switching supplier is the most effective way to ensure they are on the best deal.

A third of those who did so after getting a smart meter said their new supplier gave them a replacement — but Which? said some of those failed too.
