WHEN it comes to holidays, it is the airport extras that add up.
The average holidaymaker spends £135 on the likes of excess baggage fees, but I never do. Or rather, I never do now.

Here is how I travel . . .
Hand baggage: I resent luggage hold fees, so I try to only take hand luggage which is free. Firstly, check the airline’s website for the size of case and weight allowed, every time you travel as they change hand luggage policies a lot to catch you out. Wear as many layers as you can (you can peel these off on the plane). Fill pockets with heavy items — chargers, phones and jewellery. I double-up on items, for example, a make-up bag can be a great evening bag.
Do not splash out: Take an empty reusable cup or bottle in your hand luggage and then get a discount when buying coffee (49p at Pret) and/or fill it up at free fountains, avoiding around £1 per time buying bottled water.
Liquids allowed: The hand luggage 100ml limit is a pain. Buy mini travel bottle sets from Poundland, to decant your products into before you go. Or, instead of buying pricey bottles abroad, order them online at boots.com before you fly (five working days ahead) and then collect them after airport security. You have to spend £10 or there is a £1.50 charge. Plus, you get your Advantage Points.
Wash ‘n’ go: There is no harm in taking washing detergent with you to ensure your wardrobe lasts your whole trip. Take washing tablets (liquid tabs may explode) — but double-check with your airline.
VIP: Airport VIP lounges can be a nice holiday treat if you do want to start the party early. It can even be cheaper than eating and drinking in restaurants in the terminal while you kill a few hours. I was impressed to find Gatwick’s My Lounge entry for £17.50, down from £24, via groupon.co.uk.
