WE’VE got our first good look at Sony’s latest smartphone – and the blower’s got a bizarrely tall screen.
Photos of the gadget have leaked online just days before MWC 2019, when Sony is rumoured to be launching the phone, dubbed the Xperia 1.
Evan Blass Sony’s latest blower has a very tall screen
They were shared to Twitter by reliable leaker Evan Blass, and seem to confirm a number of rumours about the device.
Its biggest selling point is the extra-tall “CinemaWide” display, which has an aspect ratio of 21:9.
An aspect ratio measures the width to the height of an image or screen, and most phones sit around the 19:9 mark.
That means Sony has added an extra couple notches to gadget’s height without making it wider than your average blower, and it does look a little odd.
Sony It’s supposedly the followup to last year’s Xperia XZ3
It’s reportedly designed to give you a true widescreen display for watching films: 21:9 is the aspect ratio used for most modern movies, after all.
The leaked photo also reveals a triple camera system on the rear.
This takes the form of a vertical line down the centre of the handset.
The phone doesn’t shy away from bezels, stopping well short of the all-screen displays boasted by the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Honor View 20.
Instead, Sony has opted for a noticeable chin and forehead, which won’t be to everyone’s tastes.
Another opinion splitter is the colour scheme, with the render revealing that an unusual purple hue will be available.
And it appears the Japanese giant is dropping its confusing XZ naming scheme.

Rumours had suggested the phone would be called the Xperia XZ4, but Sony has instead opted for the far cleaner “Xperia 1”.
We’ll likely find out more about the gadget at Sonny’s press conference at MWC 2019 in Barcelona next week.
We’ll be reporting live from the event when it kicks off at 7:00am on February 25.
