The Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season and United have made little progress on discussions over a renewal.
The midfielder joined United from Chelsea in 2014 for £37.1million and is a popular figure with supporters for his efforts on and off the pitch.
Pep Guariola recently talked up Mata’s ability, suggesting that perhaps he’d be interested in signing the 30-year-old on a free transfer.
However, after revealing his son had been offered a new deal to stay at Old Trafford, Mata’s father has insisted he would not join City or Liverpool if he left the Red Devils.

But there are proposals from Champions League teams.
‘Spain, maybe, but today is not the day to talk, it is not yet decided.
‘At City? It would not be the ideal option. There are two clubs he would not go: Liverpool and City. We have to respect the Manchester fans, he is very liked here.’

While United are hopeful that Mata will stay, it appears likely that Ander Herrera is on his way out.
The midfielder admitted on Tuesday that his representatives and the club were ‘far apart’ in their negotiations.
He is believed to have signed a pre-contract agreement with Paris Saint-Germain.
