Man Utd news: Paul Pogba only offered vice captaincy as Ashley Young gets armband

It emerged on Tuesday that Solskjaer was prepared to give Pogba the captaincy in an effort to persuade the midfielder to snub interest from Real Madrid and commit to the Red Devils.
However, The Times now say that Pogba will in fact be offered a deputy role, with Young to take over from Antonio Valencia as the new United captain.

But United are looking to sign a new, first-choice right-back this summer – Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been mooted – meaning Young will often not be on the pitch.

Solskjaer has therefore narrowed down the candidates to be United’s on-pitch captain when Young is not in the side to three names: Pogba, David de Gea and Chris Smalling.
Nevertheless, there is still a belief that being part of the leadership team at United will give Pogba pause to consider staying at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer has praised Pogba’s leadership qualities previously, saying in January: ‘He’s a leader. You see the personality. He loves playing football. He’s a larger-than-life character.
‘When the performances come as well, that marries together as a good leader and you see what it meant to him winning the World Cup. So for me, yes, he’s captain material.’
