The 18-year-old, who has captained England at under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels, is regarded as one of the most talented players to come through United’s academy in recent years.
He was first handed a Premier League debut back in the 2016-17 campaign by Jose Mourinho, while he turned out twice for the Red Devils under Solskjaer this season.

While the youngster recognises there is a lot of talent at the club, he felt he had done enough to get more of a look in and wants to play considerably more first-team football next season – whether at United or elsewhere.
He only has one year left on his contract with United, meaning the club may need to cash in now or risk losing him for nothing in 2020.
Gomes has already been approached by clubs in Spain and Portugal as well as, notably, Paris Saint-Germain, and is looking for assurances over his game time before committing to stay at United for another year.

The teenager didn’t take well to that and feels there are plenty of world-class players with a similar stature to his own – such as Lionel Messi and Bernardo Silva – and the remark has compounded fears that Solskjaer is not the right manager to give him the opportunities he craves.
