Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his defensive options at Old Trafford and had reportedly made De Ligt, 19, one of his top targets.
The teenager is rated as one of the most promising players in the world and has enjoyed a breakthrough season for Ajax, playing over 50 games for the club.
De Ligt’s performances have helped Ajax climb to the top of the Eredivisie table, win the Dutch Cup and progress to the Champions League semi-finals.

Manchester United wanted to sign De Ligt ahead of the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool but the Daily Star say he has snubbed the chance to join the Red Devils.
It is claimed United were willing to make the Ajax man the highest-paid teenager in world football with a five-year deal worth £250,000-a-week.
However, De Ligt is said to have contacted United and made it clear to Old Trafford chiefs that he will not be signing for the club at the end of the season.
Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona – who Ajax would likely face in the final if they beat Tottenham – and the club have failed to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Last month, former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal urged De Ligt to snub the Red Devils and instead join Barcelona or Manchester City.
‘If I had the chance I would go to Barcelona,’ Van Gaal said. ‘They have central defenders who are not too good, so he will play there.
‘Or I would go to Manchester City. I don’t think the central defenders are that great either, so he’ll play there too.’
