De Gea appeared to blame the wind (Picture: Getty)David de Gea was left to curse the wind when Granit Xhaka’s tame effort swerved by him for Arsenal’s opener against Manchester United.
Arsenal welcomed the in-form United to the Emirates looking to leapfrog the Red Devils into fourth place and got off to the best possible start in the 13th minute.
De Gea, who is hailed as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, misread the flight of Xhaka’s long-range effort and watched in horror as the ball flew by him.
The wind made the ball swerve and De Gea didn’t see it ” 🤷🏼♂️😂😂😂

Xhaka’s effort flew past a De Gea going the wrong way (Picture: Getty)It appeared the Spaniard had gambled to move left rather than right, but De Gea gestured he was bamboozled by the wind.
De Gea’s excuse was picked up by Arsenal and rival fans, and was swiftly dismissed as nonsense.
The wind explanation comes hot on the heels of Jurgen Klopp pulling out the same excuse when Liverpool struggled to convert their chances against Everton in the Merseyside derby.
