BUDGET chain Lidl is raising a glass after a bottle of whisky costing just £13 was named the “best in the world”.
The retailer’s 8 Year Blended Scotch Whisky scooped top prize at the World Whiskies Awards – proving good spirits don’t have to cost the earth.

Named the Queen Margot, the drink is mellowed for eight years in oak casks to give a “smooth texture and warm finish” with “soft aromas of dried apricot and plum”
It managed to beat out stiff competition from around the world – including Johnnie Walker Black Label, which retails at almost double the cost.
The £13.49 whisky was chosen by a panel of 40 international industry experts.

It is the second time Lidl whisky has triumphed at awards – picking up gold and silver medals for its Ben Bracken Speyside Single Malt at The Scotch Whisky Masters last year.
And the supermarket scooped the prize for Own Brand Gin Supermarket of the Year at Gin Magazine’s Icons of Gin awards earlier this month.
Whisky has seen a recent boom in popularity – with sales reaching £3.4billion in 2017.
