The bargain store ditched 5p carriers last year but says that shoppers are replacing them with the 9p holders as single-use ones.
Five million of the bags for life are sold every year and the discounter reckons it will save the equivalent of 150 tonnes of plastic waste.
The trial is an attempt to encourage shoppers to bring their own reusable bags.
Customers who still need a bag at the checkout will be able to buy a heavy duty one which costs 38p or a freezer bag which costs 65p.

It also plans to launch new cotton and jute bags in the summer although it hasn’t said how much they will cost.
From May 1, all 54 Lidl branches in Wales will stock stocking the carriers.
If it’s successful, the supermarket plans to roll it out across all UK stores which will slash the number of plastic bags sold by 80million, and cut down on 2,500 tonnes of plastic waste.
The move is part of the store’s pledge to reduce plastic packaging by 20 per cent by 2022 and to making sure all of its own-brand packaging is recyclable, reusable, refillable or renewable by 2025.
Christian Härtnagel, top boss of Lidl GB the plastic bag trial would “customers shift to a fully reusable option.”
Greenpeace campaigner Elena Polisano said: “Supermarkets need to take action to drive further reductions, so we hope that Lidl roll this out in all stores and we urge all other supermarkets follow suit.”
