EVERY spring, retailers compete to come up with the most outlandish mash ups to get us in the Easter spirit.
So far this year, we’ve had everything from cream tea hot cross buns and bunny shaped chicken nuggets to Marmite flavoured Easter eggs.
Lidl says its new wine tastes like hot cross buns!
Lots of the time we’re treated to booze-flavoured treats like the new Jagermeister spiked creme eggs or this gin and prosecco chocolate egg but now Lidl has decided to reverse the trend with a wine that tastes like hot cross buns.
According to the discounter, the Moscatel Reserva de Familia is “reminiscent of the season’s traditional spiced and sweet buns loaded with currants thanks to its lusciously rich complexity and tasting notes of raisin and fig”.
So how do you create a wine that tastes like hot cross buns?
Lidl explains that the Muscat grapes are first sun dried for 10-15 days on specialised “esparto” dry grass, a species created from grasses of North Africa and southern Europe.
Then the full-bodied flavour of “Easter bun’s spices” is enhanced as the wine is matured in oak barrels.
This also helps the wine keep its sweet, syrupy texture.
The result? A wine that tastes like hot cross buns, to accompany your Easter egg that tastes like Jagermeister.
And even better – the wine is vegan too!
Richard Bampfield, Lidl’s Master of Wine, says: “This rare Spanish wine from the historic Malaga region boasts unique aromas of raisins and sweet spice, very much like that of the cinnamon and nutmeg flavours in hot cross buns.”
The wine will set you back just £6.99 and can be found in Lidl stores nationwide as part of the discounter’s Spring Wine Tour.
