Tests on mice found two types of bad cholesterol were the culprits — LDL (low density lipoprotein) and oxidised LDL.
The US rodents were given a well-balanced diet or fast food-style. The second group quickly developed stiff arteries.
The University of Illinois team said: “To our surprise, a very small amount of oxidised LDL dramatically changes the cell membrane structure.”
