Jamie Oliver has just one more restaurant left in Cornwall after 22 of his eateries went into administration (Picture: Action Press/REX/Shutterstock)Jamie Oliver’s Cornish coast restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall, will continue as an ‘independent social enterprise’ in Watergate Bay.
Twenty-two of Jamie’s UK restaurants shut down when the Jamie Oliver Restaurant Group went into administration earlier this week, so this will be one of his last remaining eateries.
The owner of the beachfront restaurant said that staff members were in tears on Tuesday when an email was circulated to staff breaking the news of the 1,000 job losses across the UK.
Owner Matthew Thomson told Cornwall Live: ‘It’s a desperately sad day. We are proud to be Fifteen Cornwall standing as an independent social enterprise, still trading as normal.’
Jamie OliverHe added: ‘We are still trading and the message to customers is to keep coming. It’s beautiful here.
‘But we are not gloating. This is painful. I’ve just briefed the staff and there are tears here. But we are the social enterprise and the silver lining in this cloud.’
Thompson met with Oliver on Monday to confirm that the license agreement they have with Jamie Oliver’s holding company is intact, allowing them to stay in operation.
Jamie previously opened Fifteen restaurant branches in Amsterdam and Australia, while the UK flagship has been visited by The Princes Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Jamie’s three Gatwick Airport venues also remain open while administrators seek a buyer, although 300 jobs there are still at risk.
A statement from restaurant owners at Fifteen said on Tuesday: ‘You may have seen in the news that Jamie Oliver’s UK restaurants are closing.
‘We would like to reassure all of our guests, suppliers, graduates and friends that Fifteen Cornwall is run separately by the Cornwall Food Foundation and therefore is not affected by the changes in the UK restaurant group.
‘As part of the Jamie Oliver family we’re feeling the pain, but we will continue the legacy started by Jamie at Fifteen, serving amazing food, mentoring young people and investing in our team. Big love x’
Opened in 2006, Fifteen has trained over 200 cookery apprentices under Jamie Oliver’s award-winning Apprentice Programme.
They took on their latest group of apprentices in April 2018.
Jamie himself said that he was ‘devastated’ and ‘deeply saddened’ that his much-loved UK restaurants had gone into administration.
He thanked all of the staff who had ‘put their hearts and souls into this business’ over the years.
