James Bulger’s mum tells of relief after film on toddler's murder fails to win Oscar

THE mum of murdered toddler James Bulger has spoken of her relief after a film about her son’s killing failed to win an Oscar.
Detainment, based on transcripts of police interviews with killers Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, had been nominated for the 91st Academy Awards in the Best Live Action Short category.

The film, written and directed by Irish filmmaker Vincent Lamb, has never received the support of James’ mum Denise Fergus.
She previously led calls for a boycott of the film and more than 90,000 people signed a petition calling for it to be banned from cinemas.
After the movie was beaten to the award by Guy Nattiv film Skin, Denise said she was delighted it had been not been honoured at the prestigious ceremony.
She wrote on Twitter: “I’m so made up, that short film detainment did not win the oscar, can’t tell you just how relieved I am, thanks to everyone who has agreed with me on this xx.”
Venables and Thompson – then aged ten – shocked the nation when they abducted the toddler and mutilated him before leaving his body on railway tracks in Bootle, Merseyside, in 1993.
Following its Oscar nomination, Denise said filmmakers had not even contacted her before its release and left her to face harrowing scenes without preparation.
She said: “It’s one thing making a film like this without contacting or getting permission from James’s family but another to have a child re-enact the final hours of James’s life before he was brutally murdered and making myself and my family have to relive this all over again.”

Former police Det Supt Albert Kirby, who led the hunt for missing James, said of the film: “I think it lacks any form of taste or decency and it has been made without any consideration of the effect on Denise, the family and also any number of other people who were involved in the sensitive issues of the investigation.
“I think, also, it does not give a true depiction of Mrs Venables.”
British actress Olivia Coleman was named Best Actress at the star-studded ceremony last night, while Rami Malek collected Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.
