Incredible app can 'colourise' ANY black and white photo and bring history to life – here's how to get it

AN AMAZING new app can “colourise” black and white photos, bring them to life like never before.
Typically, colourising a photo is a painstaking job that requires photo-retouching software and a skilled editor.

But a new web tool uses machine learning technology to create stunning colourised photos.
It means you can take old black and white photos (including famous shots, or ones from your own personal collection) and turn them into full-colour images.
All you need to do is have the image in digital format, and then upload it to the website.
You can try it here:

The tool is based on algorithmic technology, which involved training it on images over time.
This allowed the tool to learn what black and white images would look like in colour.
This knowledge can then be applied to other black and white photos, colourising them in a matter of minutes – and in some cases, seconds.
Sometimes complicated images can pose difficulty for the tool, so its creator says: “Our deep learning model performs best on higher resolution images that prominently feature human subjects and natural scenery.”

It’s also worth pointing out that the tool has no idea of knowing what the actual colours of the image would’ve been.
Instead, it’s making guesswork based on other images, trying to give you a passable photo – rather than a true colourisation.
“The purpose of colourisation is to generate an image with colours that are plausible,” the site’s creator explains.
“It by no means guarantees that the colourised image is an accurate representation of the actual snapshot in time.”
Nonetheless, it’s an impressive feat of machine learning tech – and it’s completely free to use.
