WHATSAPP users are being warned about a potentially dangerous bug that lets people snoop on your messages.
A recent update let WhatsApp users lock their messages behind Face ID or Touch ID – but a flaw means it can be bypassed.

The bug was originally spotted by a Reddit user, who posted about the gaffe on the Apple subreddit forum.
So how does the bug work?
Earlier this year, WhatsApp made it possible for iPhone owners to hide the app behind a lockscreen.
This meant that people using your unlocked phone wouldn’t be able to get into the WhatsApp app.

Only you could unlock it yourself, using either Face ID facial recognition or Touch ID fingerprint scanning.
It’s possible to set this system to only require verification every hour or so, rather than immediately.
And if you choose this option, a bug is introduced.
The iPhone has a tool called the iOS Share Sheet, which lets you share content through apps – like sending a photo via WhatsApp from your camera roll.
Using the Share Sheet resets the WhatsApp lock timer, giving users access to your WhatsApp without verification.
Note: This only affects the Face ID/Touch ID lock on your app – but not the main lock on your iPhone.
The best WhatsApp tips and tricks you need to know
WhatsApp has since confirmed the issue, and is working on a solution.
A WhatsApp spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issue and a fix will be available shortly.
“In the meantime, we recommend that people set the screen lock option to ‘immediately’.”
It’s worth avoiding using the feature for now, and checking the App Store for WhatsApp updates.
