FINGERS crossed for decent weather and a picnic this bank holiday weekend?
Chilling out with outdoor nibbles is a great way to get friends and family together but costs can mount up quickly.
Getty – Contributor Here’s how to chill with outdoors nibbles without blowing the budget
You don’t need to blow the budget, though. Here are my tips for putting on a picnic for pennies…
BULK BUY: The more friends you get together, the bigger the savings to be had. Invite a bunch of pals and ask each of them to bring a dish. This way, you can have a bit of everything you like without overspending at the deli. If cooking is not your thing, take advantage of supermarket summer spread options. Asda offers a great 3-for-£5 deal on picnic tapas — saving around £1, which will soon add up if you bulk buy. SAVE: £1.
BARGAIN BOOZE: Do not even think about a picnic without a glass of fizz. Martini Prosecco, currently £6 at Asda, will go perfectly with those nibbles — plus it saves £4 on the usual £10 price. SAVE: £4.
DO NOT BUY NEW: Recycle what you have at home. Old towels, for example, can be repurposed as picnic blankets — which saves forking out for a new one from Argos, costing £10.99. Plus, the towels are multi-use — as well as sitting on them, you can roll them up and use them as pillows, or clean hands with them. And avoid posh cutlery — Poundland has a basic 80-item pack for £1. SAVE: £10.99 on blanket.
COOL BAG: One thing you may want to invest in is a decent cool bag to keep your food fresh and your drinks cool. B&M is selling a cooler bag with ice pack for just £3.99 — a snip compared to a similar option by Thermos, £22.79. SAVE: £18.80.
