Hidden image of mysterious Apple AirPower gadget turns up on official website – but no one knows when it'll launch

APPLE may finally be ready to launch the AirPower charging mat – a gadget that has been mysteriously delayed since its 2017 announcement.
A new image of the device has turned up on Apple’s website, pictured alongside the company’s latest smartphones.

The snap was spotted buried inside the source code of Apple’s Australian website.
It was picked up by specialist Apple tech site MacRumors, which suggests that Apple “still plans to release the wireless charging mat”.
The AirPower is a long-awaited charging mat that can wirelessly power three Apple gadgets at once – including an iPhone, AirPods and an Apple Watch.
And in the new image, the AirPower is snapped charging up an iPhone XS.

That’s important because the iPhone XS was only announced in September 2018.
So this means it’s the latest “news” we’ve heard about the product from Apple.
Apple first announced the AirPower wireless charging mat in 2017.
It was debuted on stage alongside the £999 iPhone X and Apple Watch Series 3 at Apple’s annual September event.
The whole idea behind the charging mat is to make powering up gadgets much easier for Apple enthusiasts.
During the 2017 keynote, Apple demonstrated the mat charging an iPhone X, Apple Watch and wireless AirPods headphones all at the same time.

It’s based on a wireless charging technology called Qi, which is widely used by tech companies.
But Qi wireless charging doesn’t typically allow for multiple devices to be charged at once, which has proved challenging for Apple.
A recent Bloomberg article suggested that Apple was forced to delay the product for exactly that reason.
According to Apple, AirPower will be compatible with the following devices:

However, it’s likely that the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will be added to this list.
Importantly, earlier this week Apple announced a new pair of wireless AirPods earbuds.
And the new AirPods are available with a wireless charging case, which would allow them to charge up using the AirPower mat.
This had led some to speculate that Apple may be preparing an imminent launch of the AirPower.
The next best opportunity would be Apple’s March 25 event, which is expected to host the launch of the firm’s long-awaited TV streaming service – a Netflix rival.
However, Apple hasn’t confirmed any such plans, and it’s widely rumoured that the event won’t feature any hardware releases.
