Adam Johnson was released from prison last week (Picture: PA)Former Scotland boss Gordon Strachan admits he would consider signing convicted paedophile Adam Johnson following his release from prison, were he still a manager.
Johnson, who turns 32 in July, served half of the six-year sentence handed down after he was found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The ex-Sunderland and Manchester City winger, who represented England on 12 occasions, remains on licence and, as part of his release conditions, he will no longer be permitted to spend time alone with his daughter.
Earlier this week, the Daily Mail asked every chief executive based in the vicinity of Johnson’s home in the north east whether they would contemplate signing him and all gave negative responses.
Gordon Strachan claims he would consider signing Adam Johnson (Picture: Getty)Strachan, however, believes Johnson should be afforded the opportunity to resurrect his professional career should he show ‘genuine remorse’.
‘I would if he’s shown genuine remorse,’ Strachan said. ‘Then I’d say, ‘right, let’s get on with it.
‘I would because I go back to what I believe in, that everybody deserves a second chance – and he’s done his bit.
‘People will think he’s done his three years but this is for life. People will say ‘that’s that guy’.’
A leaked video, released while Johnson was serving his sentence, revealed the 31-year-old’s desire to seek a move abroad but the stringent laws in China, Australia, America and several Middle East countries would render that ambition virtually impossible.
Katie Price has denied she is helping Adam Johnson to resurrect his career (Picture: PA)Indeed, Hebei China Fortune, the club managed by former Wales head coach Chris Coleman, said they would not consider signing Johnson because of his criminal record.
Earlier this week Johnson was reported to have enlisted the help of Katie Price in a bid to restore his tarnished reputation, but a rep close to the television personality told Metro.co.uk:
[Katie] is not assisting him, no. She knows the family, that’s it.’
