Those hoping to log on were left facing an error message saying the site “can’t be reached”.
As a result, people were unable to also access Facebook Messenger on PCs or laptops.
Downdetector.co.uk received more than 6,000 complaints – with millions across the world affected.
There were also reports WhatsApp, which is owned by Facebook, experienced technical difficulties.’THANK YOU ZUCKERBERG’
Some users across the globe claimed their messages were not sent or received.
The issue also hit other countries – with users in Morocco, Ukraine, the Philippines and Greece among those complaining.
Frustrated users were forced to rely on Twitter to slam Facebook for the outage with hashtags #FacebookDown, #instagramdown and #whatsappdown all trending.
One wrote: “Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp are down. Thank you Zuckerburg, great service.”
Another fumed: “Facebook, we have a problem.”
One user joked: “Thoughts and prayers with the influencers at Coachella who can’t post because #FacebookDown #instagramdown.”
Another quipped: “The reactions to insta, whatsapp and facebook going down, seems to be a very good visualisation of what a modern day apocalypse would look like.”

It comes just one month after Facebook experienced its worse ever outage – with both social networks and WhatsApp having issues for 24 hours.
Facebook later apologised and blamed a “server configuration change”.
They said in a statement today: “Earlier today, some people may have experienced trouble connecting to the family of apps.
“The issue has since been resolved; we’re sorry for any inconvenience.”
