Tens of thousands of users have complained that the apps and websites will no longer load content, including statuses, photos and videos.
WhatsApp users say messages aren’t sending or receiving.
Instead of showing the pictures, the site exposed the tags that had been linked to the images.
The information is revealing as it shows how the sites see your life from scenic holiday snaps down to pets, hobbies and your social life.
The tags are based on the company’s object recognition system, which adds a label to the picture even if you haven’t added your own description.
Online outage tracker Down Detector began logging several hundred complaints about Instagram at 2pm on Wednesday afternoon. This was followed by a spike in reports of issues with Facebook and WhatsApp just before 3pm.
Instagram – the key factsHere’s what you need to know…
Instagram is a social network for sharing photos and videos
It was created back in October 2010 as an iPhone-exclusive app
A separate version for Android devices was released 18 months later
The app rose to popularity thanks to its filters system, which lets you quickly edit your photos with cool effects
When it first launched, users could only post square 1:1 ratio images, but that rule was changed in 2015
In 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for $1billion in cash and stock
In 2018, some analysts believe the app is worth closer to $100billion
In October 2015, Instagram confirmed that more than 40billion photos had been uploaded to the app
And in 2018, Instagram revealed that more than a billion people were using the app every month
Facebook has since confirmed to The Sun that there is a problem with its apps, and it’s “working as quickly as possible” to fix it.
Users have complained that log-ins, content loading and websites aren’t working either. WhatsApp users saying some texts are sending or receiving.
According to a live outage map, the issue primarily affects the UK and central Europe.
The mass outage isn’t a surprise: Facebook owns Instagram and WhatsApp, and shares systems across all three apps.
So an issue that affects one Facebook service can also affect others.
In a statement given to The Sun, a Facebook spokesperson said: “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble uploading images, videos and other files on our apps.
