EGGHEADS star CJ de Mooi has revealed he contracted HIV aged just 18 after being forced into prostitution while he was homeless “in a bid to stay alive”.
The 49-year-old opened up about his 30 year AIDS battle on Sunday.

“I contracted HIV when I was 18 because I was sleeping on the streets,” he told Eamonn Holmes on talkRadio on Tuesday.
“I had to resort to prostitution just in order to stay alive. I’m not ashamed of that, I did it because I wanted to live.
“Here I am 30 years later, still quite fit, quite healthy.”
CJ also faced huge legal bills fighting extradition to the Netherlands over accusations he murdered a homeless man in Amsterdam in 1988.

While the allegations were dropped in the end, the toll of his legal battle has affected his health as well as his finances, having been declared bankrupt in September last year.
“This has been a situation that I’ve been living with now for 30 years. With the current medication, the situation is manageable,” he added.
“I went to the hospital and I was stable. I’ve been given a course of new medication. Over the last three years, I’ve had a lot of issues, shall we say?”
The former quizzing star now runs the risk of losing his home in Monmouthshire because of his bankruptcy woes and a crowdfunding campaign has been set up to try and help him avoid ending up on the streets.
“The constant stress of everything that’s been going on, has, according to my doctor, weakened my immune system so much that it’s now very vulnerable.
“I’m getting more and more ill every day.”

Earlier this week, CJ revealed he’s trying a “new course of treatment” in hospital and offered his fans an update on his wellbeing.
It read: “Let’s all just cheer up a bit please! CJ is always positive and will start posting his morning videos again soon as people really miss them.”He goes to hospital tomorrow to start a new course of treatment so we’ll keep smiling and enjoy the sunny weather shan’t we?”
While the post may have come from his friend ‘Joe’ – who had previously posted about a crowdfunding page for CJ – the TV star soon posted a tweet himself.
He wrote: “Hello everyone. Thank you so much for all the kind words.

“Social media can be a rough place sometimes but my Twitter family is wonderful and I hope I can return the love and positivity you’ve shown me.”Get out there, enjoy the sun and remember you are amazing! CJ.”
CJ was axed from the BBC Two quiz show in 2016 as he faced false claims he’d sexually assaulted a man on a night out.
Taking to Twitter over the weekend, CJ opened up about his battle with AIDS, writing: “I’ve been living with AIDS for 30 years but the agony of the last 3 years means I may not have many left.
“I’m outwardly healthy, still running and am staying positive I can get better.

His friend ‘Joe’, who runs the account according to The Mirror, is encouraging fans to make donations.

A spokesman for the star told the Sun Online back in March: “He declared bankruptcy in 2018 due to opposing solicitors trying to recoup costs relating to the false allegation of sexual assault made against CJ in 2016.
“The firm put in a claim against his only asset, the home owned with his husband, and is trying to force sale.
“They are aware that CJ is very seriously ill so are apparently trying to force this through quickly.

“It is noted that the BBC suspended CJ on the very day he was questioned by police and fired him on the very day he was cleared of all suspicion.
“He has not worked since so has no savings and his only income is a disability benefit.
“It has been confirmed by a QC that at no point in the last 3 years since the case began has CJ broken the law or committed any offence whatsoever.”
