E-cigarettes should be BANNED in public, England’s top doc warns – The Sun

E-CIGARETTES should be banned in public, England’s top doc has warned.
Speaking to MPs, professor Dame Sally Davies has said that she finds having to breathe in “white clouds” of e-cig vapour offensive and that people should only be allowed to vape at home.

Although commonly touted to be up to 95 per cent more effective than tobacco smoking, she said that we still don’t know the full health impact of using e-cigarettes.
Professor Martin McKee from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine previously said that he has “serious concerns” about the safety of vape pens.
Prof McKee claims that PHE is choosing to promote vaping whilst wilfully ignoring the potential dangers – despite the fact that nearly 16 per cent of teens report having tried e-cigs.
“The nicotine in e-cigarettes is not a harmless drug and then there are all these other things such as flavourings that are inhaled,” he said.
“We haven’t had e-cigarettes for long enough to know the true effects. But when we look at the evidence we do have, there are enough grounds for serious concerns.”
Dame Sally also warned about the challenge to “persuade the public to drink moderately” – including mums-to-be.
She said that soaps should be helping mums address their damaging behaviour.
Nearly 80 per cent of expectant mums drink alcohol and 25 per cent admit to binge drinking, a study last year found.
She added: “What we need to find . . . are the nudges to impact this so that people change their way of life while pregnant.
“We probably need things like EastEnders and Casualty to have episodes which bring this out.”

She also told the Science and Technology Committee that all NHS staff should be required to have the flu jab each year.
Eighteen patients died in 2010 after catching the bug from hospital staff. But figures show 30 per cent of health workers were not vaccinated in 2018.
Dame Sally said: “I think consideration should be given to making it a contractual duty.”
