Britain’s Got Talent finalist Colin Thackery has opened up on his marriage to his late wife Joan.
The Korean war veteran had fans in tears after his heartfelt performance of Vera Lynne’s We’ll Meet Again.
And now, after being sent through to the finals of the ITV competition, the 89-year-old appeared on Lorraine to to talk about his wife.
The much loved performer beamed as he recalled the first time they met at a dance.
He laughed: ‘She shouldn’t have been there, her dad didn’t want her to go out with soldiers…
‘We moved south from Durham and we decided to get married on vocation leave, I had two weeks leave before I got on the ship [to Korea].’
Joan and Colin were married for 66 years (Picture: ITV/Supplied)He continued: ‘People didn’t know if it was a good idea, because you might no make it. Joan’s own dad came back from the first world war minus an arm, but it all panned out.’
Colin explained how they were reunited two years later, when Joan was shipped out to join him in Hong Kong.
‘Instead of coming home my regiment was posted to Hong Kong,’ he explained: ‘We stayed abroad for another two years then, but we were allowed to bring our wives out for free.’
‘So, here’s this young girl, I think she was only 19 then, from a small mining village who had never been as far as the coast coming all around the world.’
He dedicated his performance to Joan on BGT (Picture: Rex)He smiled: ‘She had a very fine alto voice, so after when I retired we moved to Norfolk and we both belonged to an operatic society there.
‘We sang all the time and danced, of course! We were always dancing and if you looked at the projectors on the back of the stage [on BGT] there were pictures of us dancing.’
Joan passed away in December 2016, but it sounds as though Colin still feels her presence.
‘I have a lovely picture of her in my bedroom up on the wall,’ he said before laughing: ‘I talk to her all of the time, as daft as it sounds.’
