Madonna just performed with four versions of herself (Picture: NBC/Billboard Music Awards)Madonna just pulled off every music fan’s fantasy at the Billboard Music Awards 2019 – dancing with Madonna.
The 60-year-old performed with not just one but four holograms of herself that looked like tiny dancing Sim versions of our favourite pop icon, who were all there to debut her new song Medellín.
Of course, collaborator Maluma was there, but we couldn’t take our eyes of the girlband-style routine going on between her five Madame X alter-egos from their carnivalesque music video, released last month.

And the four dancers took the stage solo (Picture: NBC/Billboard Music Awards)Madame X – identified by her signature eye patch – is the queen of pop’s mysterious new alter-ego.
She describes Madame X as a ‘secret agent travelling around the world, changing identity, fighting for freedom’.
And we now know that the character has taken the form of ‘a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother a child, a teacher, a nun, a sinner, a saint, a whore and a spy.’
Bringing these characters to life, Madonna used state-of-the-art technology which has previously been used to bring deceased pop stars back to the stage, like Tupac at Coachella in 2012 and Michael Jackson at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Things got pretty tactile between Maluma and Madonna onstage (Picture: NBC/Billboard Music Awards)But Madonna’s performance, complete with CGI green screen, is believed to have cost $5million dollars of her own money, with Billboard contributing nothing to the staging, reports suggest.
Signifying her return to the pop scene, Madonna has been practising the performance at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the last week to make sure that timing and positioning with the Madame Xs was laser-sharp.
Early reports suggested that it was ‘one of the most ambitious performances ever attempted on live TV’.
And Madonna did not disappoint on the night. Fans watching at home hailed it a triumph, calling the stage show ‘fire’ and ‘legendary’.
Suffice to say, the Queen of Pop is officially back!
