DOES duty-free shopping send your holiday spend soaring? As many of us start planning our summer breaks, research reveals travellers could actually be facing sky-high mark-ups at the airport instead of saving cash.
The comparison website finder.com discovered that in some cases, holidaymakers are paying up to 150 per cent more when buying goodies such as booze, perfume and chocolates at the terminal. Here is what to shop and what to drop when you are dashing your way through duty free.

SOMETHING TO WINE ABOUT: Passengers often assume that they are grabbing a bargain on alcohol at the airport, but wine is a no-no. A bottle of Domaine de Tholomies Chardonnay, for instance, usually retails at £11.69 yet will set you back £15.99 at the airport.
BACK IN THE SPIRIT: Duty-free spirits work out at a far better deal than wine. For example, a 1-litre bottle of Absolut Vodka can be snapped up for just £15.59, compared to the retail price of £25.
CHOCS AWAY: Popular sweet treats do not usually fare very well for travelling chocoholics. A Cadbury’s Oreo chocolate bar costs £5 at London airports while it is just £2 at the local supermarket. Meanwhile, a 250g bag of peanut M&M’s costs £3.50 at duty free, yet just £1.50 at supermarkets.
SNIFF OUT A BARGAIN: Cosmetics, perfume, aftershave and beauty products usually offer the best bang for your buck when shopping in duty free. The popular fragrance Armani Diamonds can be bought for 30 per cent less at the airport, costing £51.05 compared with £72 online.
