Actress Marcia Cross’ anal cancer probably caused by same virus that gave her husband throat cancer – The Sun

ACTRESS Marcia Cross’ anal cancer was probably caused by the same virus that gave her husband throat cancer, she has revealed.
The Desperate Housewives star has opened up about her battle with anal cancer to end the stigma around the disease.

The 57-year-old was diagnosed a year and a half ago but kept it secret until last September.
But she was left stunned when doctors told her the human papilloma virus – or HPV – that gave husband Tom Mahoney throat cancer in 2009 could have also caused her tumour.
Speaking to CBS This Morning , the star, who played Bree Van De Kamp in Desperate Housewives, said she was forced to juggle work commitments with home life as Tom underwent treatment when their children Savannah and Eden were young.
She said: “I would be like working all day. I would be in the emergency room at night. Plus, I had two toddlers. So it was a busy time.
When Tom went into remission eight years later, Marcia was diagnosed with her own cancer.
I know there are people who are ashamed. You have cancer! Do you have to then also feel ashamed? Like you did something bad, you know, because it took up residence in your anus? I mean, come on, really. There’s enough on your plate
She told the programme:”I know there are people who are ashamed. You have cancer! Do you have to then also feel ashamed? Like you did something bad, you know, because it took up residence in your anus? I mean, come on, really. There’s enough on your plate.
“Even for me, it took a while [to talk about it]. Anus, anus, anus. You just have to get used to it.”
Cross then went through six weeks of  radiation, followed by two weeks of chemotherapy.
And she said her friends helped her through that time.
She  explained: “What I had was a bevy of girlfriends … I called them my ‘anal angels’.”
Cross previously told People magazine:  “I want to help put a dent in the stigma around anal cancer.
“I’ve read a lot of cancer-survivor stories, and many people, women especially, were too embarrassed to say what kind of cancer they had.
“There is a lot of shame about it. I want that to stop.”
She underwent three months of “gnarly” treatment and is now nearly a year into remission, with a low chance of recurrence.
4 The actress shared this picture last year after losing her hair
She said of her treatment: “In the beginning, I just sort of lay down for the parting of the cheeks and I would float away. Because what are you going to do?”
Cross who says she is now a “big fan of the anus”, said: “Every time I go to the bathroom, I think, ‘That’s awesome! Thank you, body.’”
She is now campaigning to raise awareness of the HPV vaccination.
HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that most people will get in their life. Most strains are symptom-less, but some can cause genital warts or even cancer of the genitals, anus, cervix and throat.
Last September Cross surprised fans when she shared a picture of her hair loss – as many didn’t know she had been secretly battling cancer.

The facts about HPV
HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that most people will get in their life. Most strains are symptom-less, but some can cause genital warts or even cancer of the genitals, anus, cervix and throat.
Many types of HPV affect the mouth, throat or genital area – and they’re easy to catch.
You do not need to have penetrative sex to catch HPV.
You can get HPV from any skin-to- skin contact of the genital area.
But HPV has no symptoms, so you may not know if you have it.
HPV types linked to cancer are called high-risk types.
Cancers linked to high-risk HPV include: cervical, anal, cancer of the penis, vulval cancer and some types of head and neck cancer.
